Ontario Forestry Education Program

Ontario Forestry Education Program

This program, developed by Forest Renewal Co-op, was designed to educate Ontario students about the forest industry in Ontario through hands-on learning. The program consists of three parts in which students will:

  • grow tree seedlings
  • manage Ontario’s forestlands
  • plant trees at school

With many links to the Ontario curriculum, this program can be acquired with lesson plans for different grades to provide a basic to very complex, experiential and/or cross-curricular learning experience for nearly all grade levels from 1-12! With this program we hope to increase awareness and understanding of the forest industry in Ontario in a fun and educational way. Please review the information on each component and read how each is linked to the curriculum. Contact the Forest Renewal Co-op with any questions you may have.

Growing Places

Growing Places begins with an educational video/DVD about the seedling nursery industry in Ontario. A short quiz (provided) can be completed during or after the video. After learning about this industry students will act as nursery growers themselves by growing a small crop of trees from seed. All the necessary equipment can be provided and lesson plans accompany each activity. A small guide to growing forest seedlings is also provided and will direct students through the growing process with tips on successful seedling development.

Ontario Forest Management

The Ontario Forest Management section of the program begins with a PowerPoint/Overhead slide presentation, which outlines the forest management system in Ontario. The presentation describes how Ontario’s forests are managed for: fish and wildlife, wood products, tourism and recreation, archaeological and environmental protection. It will provide base-knowledge on this system to be built upon with a board game. Students playing the board game will take on the roles of various forest managers from company manager to fish and wildlife biologists and will manage their forest in order to be sustainable, ecologically friendly, socially accepted and profitable. Various scenarios encountered during the game will give students a real sense of what it is like to be a forest manager in Ontario and the experience will help students better appreciate this vital industry in our province. Lesson plans and background information sheets on Ontario’s Forest Industry are provided.

Green Side Up!

Green Side Up! focuses on reforestation in Ontario. Students will view a video/DVD about treeplanting in Ontario. This occupation is incredibly difficult and students will learn much about how to plant their own seedlings. A brief quiz (provided) can be filled in during or following the video. If the Growing Places component of the program was followed students will no doubt be eager to plant the trees they have so long been caring for. The Green Side Up! treeplanting and research guide can be used to simply plant the seedlings or, for older students, it can guide students in developing Silviculture research trials to be planted at school. These trials can be made very simple or complex. The trials will exist on the school property for years to come and can become a research project for the school to use for years!
