Woodlot Association

Why not take an active role within your local woodlot community and plan to attend the up coming information session on May 10th, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. at the Valhalla Inn, Thunder Bay, ON to learn more about how a local woodlot association can work for you!

  • Who is the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA)?
  • How the OWA began?
  • How the OWA is structured (i.e., provincial body with regional representation).
  • How an effective woodlot association can help woodlot owners in the Thunder Bay region, both at the local level and provincial level.
  • Outline the next steps in forming a local woodlot owners association.

How a Local Woodlot Association Can Work for You!
Woodlot owners across Ontario manage their forests for a variety of reasons.  Some manage their forests for income; to preserve wildlife, maintain wilderness values for recreation, while others say their priority is to maintain a rural lifestyle.  The common thread that links these landowners together is their desire to manage their forests to the best of their ability.

Despite their best intentions, many woodlots are not as healthy as they could be.  Traditionally, private woodlot owners have lacked easy access to current forest and wildlife management information.  As we moved through the 1990's and into the 21st century it is very evident that we can no longer depend on government agencies or other organizations to provide all the services and information woodlot owners require to successfully meet their property goals and objectives.  The answers and solutions will have to come through innovative approaches and self help associations, like the Ontario Woodlot Association.

Formed in 1992, the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA) was founded to enable woodlot owners to have a provincially based organization to represent their interests, concerns and their future.  From its early beginnings the OWA recognized the need for a provincial organization that would provide a common voice for woodlot owners and foster a strong active local presence.  The OWA's unique provincial body and regional chapter structure meets this need.

The OWA's regional chapter structure (local woodlot associations) allows members to work with fellow woodlot owners on local needs through workshops, woodlot tours and a general sharing of knowledge and experiences.  Members have the opportunity to provide input in determining the direction on local issues, which affect woodlot owners and obtain advice on all aspects of forest management.

The OWA is recognized as a leader in promoting sustainable forestry practices, and also service as a common voice for the woodlot owner.  We speak to government; forest industry and other organizations on issues that affect the ownership and management of privately owned forests in Ontario.  As a united association we offer the opportunity to make constructive changes in the management of Ontario's private forests.
