Revised Strategic Plan
FOREST RENEWAL CO-OP INC. Strategic Plan Revised July 2008 Mission statement Forest Renewal Co-op is committed to becoming a leader in innovative research and development for the purpose of ensuring quality forest seedlings and proper plantation establishment for the regeneration of tomorrow’s forests. VISIONS, GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Vision Statement

GOAL # 1 FUNDING OBJECTIVES 1. To develop a source of core funding for administration from outside agencies. Action: By the end of the new fiscal year of September 2009, we will have approached four funding agencies to request funding to help with administration 2. To secure funding for research projects, both client and Co-op driven. Action: Funding proposals will be developed and sent to appropriate funding agencies on receipt of research projects from both client and the Co-op in the priority that they are received. GOAL # 2 MEMBERSHIPS OBJECTIVES 1. To continue to encourage membership by all potential partners and including OPFA, MNR, OFA, OWA, and OFIA. The purpose being to ensure that tech transfer is fully completed at the highest level to promote best plantation growth. Action: We are contacting the potential partners and other organizations listed above to ask them to link us to their web site and vice versa. This will be done by December 30th, 2008 We will market the Co-op and its benefits, through our website, advertisements in The Working Forest newspaper and Canadian Silviculture magazine and travelling workshops. We will begin this membership drive in mid November and go until mid December. We will continue to visit, north western Ontario, then Central Ontario and finally Southern Ontario. We will be producing an itinerary by, September, 2008. To revisit existing membership packages and revise as needed. Action: The Revised Strategic Plan will be added to the existing package. Any updates will be done on Power Point with copies made for handouts and for use on overhead projectors. We will send out the packages to those potential partners that show interest in membership. GOAL # 3 TO CONTINUE WITH TECH TRANSFER OBJECTIVES 1. To continue to update the catalogue of all Co-op projects 2. To continue to obtain a summary of papers (stock production and plantation establishment) at the Federal and Provincial Level and catalogue them. Action: A catalogue of our resources will be posted on our website and in a booklet. The booklet will be produced by January 2009 Members and public will be able to order listed reports or library material on our website or by contacting the office. We will provide website linkages to those agencies with relevant data-bases. They will also be available to non-members for a nominal charge. 3. To continue with the workshops, newsletter and conferences. Action: We will continue to provide professional workshop presentations, upon request. We will continue to look for innovative workshop ideas which will promote the Vision of the Co-op. Conferences will be attended with the intent of providing and receiving information relevant to the membership. The newsletter will be published on a quarterly basis on our new web page. GOAL # 4 TO PROMOTE FOREST RENEWAL AS A PRIORITY FOR FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS OBJECTIVES:
Action: We will continue to communicate any incoming information to our members. Our AGM will have a one-day workshop to convey our reports and provide opportunity for discussion. We will update our web page regularly with new information.
Action: We will continue to approach the appropriate government agencies to present a case for Forest Renewal Research in Ontario. Given the opportunity to present our case, we will develop a presentation highlighting the level of professionalism in our Co-op with reference to the client driven and Co-op projects that we have completed.
Action: We will monitor the web sites and programs available from the government on a regular basis and apply for funding to the appropriate agency. We will use Lakehead University’s, intellectual property office, graduate studies and research office as a source of information to locate appropriate funding opportunities.
Action: We will encourage the director of the Forestry Futures, to include additional intensive forest management strategies as eligible activities for Forestry Futures funding. We will encourage the membership to inform us of strategies which they wish to see funded. GOAL # 5 TO PROMOTE MORE PLANTING OF TREES OBJECTIVES: 1. To get involved with agencies planting trees. Action: This will be accomplished by working with Trees Ontario Foundation, private landowners, Stewardship Council, Boy Scouts of Canada, Kyoto, and Trees Canada. 2. To encourage the use of Co-op seedlings and services. Action: We will promote the Co-op membership activities and services by word of mouth, through the website, e-mails and through promotional activities. On receiving requests for seedlings, we will refer the clients to our grower members. GOAL # 6 TO BE PROACTIVE IN BUSINESS ISSUES BROUGHT FORTH BY AND RELATING TO THE MEMBERSHIP OBJECTIVES: 1. To develop contacts to deal with issues. Action: We will continue to endeavour to meet new people in the forestry sector and other related businesses to develop relationships that will be beneficial to the management of the Co-op and the membership. We will contact them once an issue comes to our attention. 2. To keep current on business issues. Action: We will continue to receive the Canadian Silviculture Magazine and The Working Forest, newsletters from Ontario, BC and US Forestry Extension Services, forestry and agriculture magazines, We will continue to attend pertinent conferences and workshops, trade fairs and symposiums. 3. To provide a Forum for communication on business issues. Action: We will continue to be the Ontario Regional liaison to the Canadian Silviculture Magazine.We will submit articles and work with the Canadian Silviculture Magazine by providing accurate input on the silviculture activities of Ontario. We are continuing to follow the Service Standards of the Co-op General Operating Guide. We will encourage members to bring business issues to us. We will use our contacts to help resolve issues. Business issues which are relevant to the membership will be discussed at the AGM. GOAL # 7 TO PROMOTE THE USE OF PLANTING AS A RENEWAL TOOL FOR FOREST SUSTAINABILITY OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide educational and promotional information to the public through workshops, literature distribution, classroom education, tours, and trades shows to show that forest plantations are diverse. Action: We will continue with our Stock Handling 101 Workshop and will update the presentation with new developments and material. We will distribute any promotional material to the public as it is presented to the Co-op from its membership. We are participating in the silviculture lectures at Confederation College and we have been asked to participate in the Lakehead University seminar series. There is sufficient information available (videos, pamphlets, handouts) in our office and through a power point presentation to be able to put a package together to present to interest groups. Funding can be made available to do this. We can encourage members to include us in events that they are holding. 2. To raise the profile of silviculture. Action: We will continue to send articles and or material to various agencies on request. We will request web page links to our members and other agencies that will raise the profile of the Co-op and hence the profile of silviculture. We can advertise and promote the Co-op’s new Vision and Mission statement at our presentations and meetings with other agencies. GOAL #8 TO BE PROACTIVE IN MEMBER RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide/act on opportunities for research with and for our membership. 2. To finish all research projects. 3. To provide accurate and unbiased results. Action: The membership will be surveyed prior to field season, to determine their research interests for the year. The program manager will encourage collaboration between members with similar research interests, to make projects more affordable. The Program Manager will oversee all projects to ensure that the field/data collection is complete and accurate. Reports will reflect the data and results will relate to forest renewal operations, by including cost/benefit analyses, discussions relating to free-to-grow and volume and yield calculations after five growing seasons. GOAL # 9 TO CREATE A FORUM FOR MEMBER GROUPS TO DISCUSS ISSUES OF CONCERN AND TO PROMOTE MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND PROBLEM SOLVING WITHIN THE CO-OP OBJECTIVES:
Action: A committee will be formed in the winter of 2004 to prepare a set of protocols to deal with dispute resolution within the membership. These protocols will be finalized by the committee and presented to the Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD will approve the protocols and on approval, the protocols will be implemented. GOAL# 10 TO OPERATE THE FOREST RENEWAL CO-OP LIKE A BUSINESS OBJECTIVES:
Action: New Strategic plan will be complete and ready to be approved by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in January 2009.
Action: We will continue with our bookkeeper-Jeff Lafontaine and employ Fitzpatrick and Partners to audit our accounting system at the end of our fiscal year. We will continue to use the “Project” portion of Simply Accounting to track all projects for cost analysis purposes
