In nature, steroids are known to be manifested in different formats and also in different categorizations. These categories are typically three in number and will include the fungus steroids, animal steroids, and plant steroids. We can therefore conclude that steroids are present in nature within the natural ecosystems as well as being present in the form of chemical substances that are part of various natural substances. There are two types of categories as a result and these are the functional categories as well as the taxonomical categorizations of the same. The latter categorization is the one that includes the three types listed above i.e. the animal, fungus, and plant steroids.

The animal steroids are composed of both insect steroids and vertebrate steroids. The insect category of steroids is largely centered on the Ecdysteroid which is itself contained in the ecdsterone hormone.  The vertebrate steroids are mostly those that are functional. They are a good number of steroids in this category. Starting with the sex hormones we can see that this group is amongst other roles responsible for the development of sexual differences and they are therefore known by an alternative name i.e. reproduction supports. Included in this category are hormones that include androgens, estrogens, and progestogens.

Also in the category of the vertebrate steroids we can include the corticosteroids and these will further be subdivided into the gluco-corticoids and the mineral corticoids. The latter are known to be most important in the regulation of the renal activities as well as the maintenance of the blood volumes in the body. Gluco-corticoids are useful in the bodily regulation of the immune system and also in the continued metabolism processes of the body.

Anabolic steroids are part of the functional vertebrate steroids. These steroids are responsible for bettering the interaction of the androgen receptors and are important in the synthesis of both bone and muscle in the body of a user. These are the steroids that we usually talk about on a daily basis and therefore one should always know that when the word ‘steroid’ is mentioned it is used in reference to anabolic steroids.
Cholesterol is yet another type of vertebrate steroid. This particular steroid is useful in the regulation of the fluidity that is required in the cell membranes. Another top use for this steroid is being a major constituent of a wide variety of plaques that are inherent in the atherosclerosis as a process.

Moving on to the plants category we can find the steroids being manifested in the form of both brassinosteroids and phytosterols that are both constituent elements of the plants in which they are contained. The fungus group is certainly the least represented and the steroids will mostly occur in the form of Ergosterols.

Steroids, in general, tend to vary in the aforementioned categories. They are chemically attached to the compound rings and also to the oxidation formats that belong to the steroid rings. In the animal and fungus category, steroids are made in the cell domain referred to as sterol lanosterol while in plants it is in the sterol cyclartenol.
